Tipping counters are used for the quantitative determination of seepage water and surface water runoff. For this purpose, the direct quantity of water flowing off is recorded as a flow rate (also volume flow). The flow rate indicates which volume of a fluid flows through a certain cross-sectional area in a certain time. Tipping counters thus offer a highly time-resolved, automated alternative to leaching tests.
The tipping counters made of V2A steel are very robust and inert to water of different origin and composition. Due to the stable material, significantly larger designs are possible than with plastic tipping meters. To accommodate all flow volumes, these tipping counters are available with a wide range of tipping pan sizes - from 0.1 to 20 liters. From a volume of 5 liters, we recommend an open design.
Note: The operating temperature for our V2A tipping meters is up to 0 °C. Below freezing point, freezing of the water must be expected, especially in the inlet. To prevent the water from freezing, the entire tipping meter can be encased, insulated and/or fitted with pipe trace heating on request. Please specify this when ordering.
Fields of application:
- Detection of leachate rates in lysimeters.
- In combination with the Run Off system, tipping counters can be used to measure surface runoff on slopes. Surface runoff plays a significant role in the hillslope hydrology of small catchments.
- When combined with the H-Flume, tipping counters provide high measurement accuracy during low-flow conditions, while the H-Flume accurately measures higher flows in open channels.
Up to a tipping bucket volume of three liters, the tipping counters are equipped with a connection for aliquot sampling. For each tipping, 0.1...3 % volume aliquote is then filled into a PE collection bottle for further analysis in the laboratory via an outlet connection with hose connection and shut-off valve.
