Hellmann rain gauge

Hellmann rain gauge

With the Hellmann rain gauge, precipitation is collected with a funnel. The special feature of the Hellmann rain gauge is the cylindrical upper part with a sharp-edged collecting edge above the funnel. The upper part serves as a wind shield. It prevents the wind from blowing the precipitation away or driving additional precipitation into the funnel. This minimizes the influence of wind on the measurement results. The collection area is 200 cm². The collected precipitation is fed into a collection container via the funnel. The funnel and the shape of the collection container protect the collected precipitation as far as possible against evaporation, etc.

The associated measuring cylinder is used to easily determine the height of the precipitation by gauging. The scale (mm) of the measuring cylinder is specially calibrated for the collecting surface of the Hellmann rain gauge, so that no conversion is necessary after reading. 1 mm of precipitation corresponds to 1 liter/m² of liquid. The collection container is usually emptied once a day and the volume determined.

Hellmann rain and snow gauge

For regions where snowfall occurs frequently, the snow cross is an important addition to the Hellmann rain and snow gauge. It consists of a cross-shaped device that is inserted above the funnel of the rain gauge in the upper part. When snow falls, it collects on the arms of the cross and is guided into the measuring container by gravity. The snow cross prevents the snow from blowing away or being carried away by the wind, thus ensuring precise measurements of the amount of snow.

The combination of the funnel, the wind shield and the snow cross makes the Hellmann rain gauge a reliable instrument for recording precipitation amounts, regardless of whether it is rain or snow
