Band Dendrometers for Monitoring Tree Growth

Band dendrometers enable continuous, non-invasive monitoring of changes in stem circumference and, consequently, tree growth. In addition to long-term growth, short-term fluctuations in stem tissue can be detected, for example in response to diurnal or microclimatic changes. High-resolution measurements provide detailed insights into tree growth dynamics and water use.

The DR26 series dendrometers use a rotary position sensor and enable stepless measurement of changes in stem circumference. Their simple, non-invasive attachment allows individual trees to be monitored even across large study areas. Dendrometer data can, for example, be combined with sap flow measurements to investigate relationships between stem growth, water use and environmental conditions.

Three variants for different measurement concepts

The DR26 series is available in three versions:

  • DR26 – analog: Analog voltage output for connection to an external data logger.
  • DRL26 – with integrated data logger: Autonomous data storage directly on the dendrometer. The integrated lithium battery enables independent operation without an external power supply or solar panel. Data transfer and configuration are carried out via an infrared interface.
  • DRS26 – with SDI-12 output: Digital data transmission via the standardized SDI-12 interface for connection to an external data logger.

This allows the appropriate dendrometer to be selected according to the desired data acquisition, power supply and integration into an existing monitoring system.
